Small update from my September post. As you may know, Canonical freezes software packages a few weeks before a new distribution comes out.Only security updates will be installed after the freeze. If you want new fectures for your software, you need to install a ppa. To add a repository on your system the new way (9.10 and higher) all you do is “sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonoomph/openshot-edge” Some software on this list may no longer be updated for older systems. 1: Chromium - Stable: ppa:chromium-daily/stable [10.04+] 2: Firefox - Stable: ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable [10.04+] 3: Thunderbird - Stable: ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-stable [10.04+] 4. Openshot - Bleeding Edge: ppa:jonoomph/openshot-edge [9.10+] 5. LibreOffice - Stable: ppa:libreoffice/ppa [10.04+] 6. The Gimp - Trunk: ppa:matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn [9.04+] 7. Pidgin - Stable: ppa:pidgin-developers/ppa [10.04+] 8. Shotwell - Stable: ppa:yorba/ppa [11.04+] ppa:flexiondotorg/shotwell [10.04 **, 10.10 **] 9. WineHQ - Stable: ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa [6.06+] 10. Banshee - Stable: ppa:banshee-team/ppa [7.10+] ** Must enable the GStreamer PPA to use: ppa:gstreamer-developers/ppa Some software I recommend getting from the office site: TOR VirtualBox PlayOnLinux Vuze The news about Ubuntu dropping Banshee, Tomboy And Mono from the 12.04 CD doesn't bother me. I don't like Banshee, I use Tomboy sometimes, but I don't like it being automatically installed on my computers with lower disk space, I can install that from the Software Center easily. And for Mono, I use a custom PPA for that, not the default Ubuntu version.
I would like Synaptic Package Manager being installed by default. I use that program a lot. I'm not sure if I will be upgrading to 12.04 when it comes out. If Canonical doesn't extend support for 10.10, I guess I will have to upgrade or move to some other distribution. I'm probably going to stay with XFCE as my desktop environment. I'm to geeky to use Unity or GNOME 3. I have over 30 programs running at once at times. As for Windows 8, I already know I'm not going to upgrade any of my personal or business computers to that in 2012. I'll buy a OEM copy when it comes out and use it as a virtual machine. I will offer full support for Windows 8 for repair, service and Win7 to Win8 Upgrades. At this time, I do not have a plan to build "Designed for Windows 8" computers. As for Windows XP, I'm planing to move it from Full Support to Moderate Support due to some software dropping SP3 in 2012. Windows Vista SP2 and Windows 7 RTM, SP1 will stay at Full Support. Some other plans in the works... Removing all ads from this website. Expanding Android support next year. Partnership/Affiliation with businesses. Expanding our investment portfolio. Name change to attract more customers. New domain name. Official Business LLC. Complying with all California state and federal business laws, regulations and taxes. Flash Player is now out and your wondering how to upgrade?
Your options are, go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ and install it yourself using one of the versions or use a script file to install Flash Player on your system. The script file can be downloaded at http://web.techfurs.net/Flash11ForUbuntu.html then follow the directions so the script will install it for you. If you need any help or have questions, feel free to comment. Edit: Updated on March-12-2012. Fixed link, updated page, updated software to 11.1.102.63. According to a blog post by Reed Hastings, Co-Founder and CEO of Netflix; Netflix will end DVD's by mail and turn into a streaming only service. They are going to start up a new company called Qwikster for DVD's by mail only. This news comes as Netflix stopped DVD rentals off their $7.99 streaming plain and recored price hikes.

Today the Senate passed H.R. 1249 after being passed in the House in June. Bill now goes to the president who is expected to sign. The bill changes the US patent system from a First-to-invent to a first-to-file system that will move ownership structure of patented inventions towards large corporations, away from independent inventors and small businesses. This bill has strong support from some of the largest corporations in the world, including:* 3M American Bankers Association BP Exxon Mobil Corporation General Electric Intel Johnson & Johnson Merck Microsoft Motorola PepsiCo, Inc. Pfizer Procter & Gamble Company (Full list at MapLight.org) Some businesses and organizations opposing this bill are:* Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) American Civil Liberties Union Generic Pharmacutical Association IP Advocate National Small Business Association (Full list at MapLight.org) *Source maplight.org The list of Senate Members who voted on this bill can be found at http://politics.nytimes.com/congress/votes/112/senate/1/129 While using VirtualBox you may get this error “Failed to access the USB subsystem.
VirtualBox is not currently allowed to access USB devices. You can change this by adding your user to the 'vboxusers' group. Please see the user manual for a more detailed explanation.” to fix this you must add yourself to the vboxusers group. To fix that error follow these steps: 1: Enter this into the terminal, gpasswd -a 'yourusername' vboxusers 2: Logout of your account then log back in. 3: Open up VirtualBox and USB support should be enable. Sellect the USB drive like you would on Windows. If you have the daily build of Chromium installed but you want to downgrade to the stable build, this blog post may help you out.
1: Open up the Synaptic Package Manager and type in chromium-browser. 2: Right click on chromium-browser then click on Mark for Complete Removal. 3: Click on Apply. Wait for Chromium in uninstall. 4: Click on chromium-browser then Package on the Menu Bar then click on Force Version... Choose the version you want to install Eg. (your ubuntu version-updates) then click on Force Version then click Apply. 5: After Chromium is back installed, run this command in the Terminal to delete your old user data profile (Not as Super-user!) rm -f './.config/chromium/Default/Web Data' 6: The stable build of Chromium should now be install and work without any errors. It looks like Microsoft is pulling DVD playback support in Windows 8. Some OEM's might stay away from Windows 8 for the Laptop and Desktop if they don't want to buy a license for each system or they might charge the consumer extra. OEM's that make netbooks and tablets will probably stay will Windows 8 since most don't have a optical drive. Microsoft started including DVD playback support in Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows 7 Home Premium and higher has DVD playback support. If Microsoft does end their partnership with Dolby and they don't find a alternative, customers will have to get their own license for DVD playback. Eg. CyberLink PowerDVD SE (Around $15 retail).
With movie streaming on the rise, it's only time until all movie disks become obsolete. Apple is already phasing out optical drives. ~darkfur93 Written on LibreOffice 3.4.2 |
